The “Two Sides of the Coin” diptych explores Sephardic and Ashkenazi culture through the dress and garb of each tradition.
The left “Sephardi” image is layered with golden-threaded, brightly hued fabric, silver adornments, and vivid hand-embroidered tapestries. The stone wall symbolizes the Western Wall in Jerusalem, geographically anchoring this design to the region, and reminding us of the Jews/Israelites existence in the Middle East since biblical times. At the image base, a trove of unearthed ancient coins is depicted. The background features the warm, shifting sands of the desert.
The right “Ashkenazi” image is layered with the black gabardine of the “Haredi” Jews, the lush fur of the “shtreimel”, and the traditional “tallit” or prayer shawl. Layers of lace evoke a feeling of depth, specialness, and chastity. Cobblestones and fraying fabric represent the difficult history of Jews during the time of the Holocaust. The background features the crystal cold snows of Eastern Europe.
