"The Seven Species" is inspired by passages from the Torah, found in the book of Deuteronomy, that describe Hashem's gift of the fertile, bountiful land of Israel to the Jewish people.
"For the Lord your G-d is bringing you to a good land, a land with brooks of water, fountains and depths, that emerge in valleys and mountains, a land of wheat and barley, vines and figs and pomegranates, a land of oil producing olives and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, you will lack for nothing in it, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose mountains you will hew copper. And you will eat and be sated and you shall bless the Lord, your G-d, for the good land He has given you."
Within this design, a series of curved shapes lead the eye to the mountain vista of Israel, bathed in golden light. The layer above, represents the shifting desert sands. On the translucent layer above, words of Torah in gold, speak to the 7 varieties of foods consumed by Jewish people in biblical times. The blue layer above, symbolizes water, the necessary ingredient that allows vegetation to flourish in the arid desert. 7 small windows depict each of these essential foods. The top-most layer in purple, symbolizes our connection to Hashem. It is there that the translation of the Hebrew words resides to fill us with gratitude and understanding. All of the layers come together to create a stylized image of the land of Israel. Finally, a mosaic border, reminiscent of art from biblical times, surrounds the entire design.
