From myth and legend emerges the story of the Golem of Prague. Created from clay gathered from the banks of the river Vlatava by the Maharal, Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the Golem acted as a protector to the Jews of the Prague Ghetto against anti semitic attacks and pogroms in the late 16th century.

The left side of the design depicts the Golem seemingly striding out of the frame. Superimposed on the figure is a woodcut depicting images of violence against the Jewish residents during a pogrom. This is the Golem's rallying cry. He is ready to defend the Jewish population. Through the center of the design flows a winding river. It is easy to imagine that this was where clay was extracted and molded to form the human figure of the Golem. The right side displays the tomb of the Maharal, surrounded by a fragment from the mystical Kabbalah. It is said that he was a master of its teachings, and explains the method, along with sacred rituals and incantations, through which he brought the Golem to life.

Surrounded by an ethereal halo are the Hebrew words "Emet" - Truth, and "Met" - Death. In some versions of the legend, it is said the word "Emet" was inscribed on the forehead of the Golem in order to bring him to life. The clay humanoid carried out the will of the Maharal day and night, except for Shabbat, when it too "rested". After a time, when the Golem's mission was complete, Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel removed the "aleph" from the life giving word, leaving the word "Met" - Death. The breath of spirit departed the creature, and it fell into pieces before the synagogue. Its remains are said to have been stored in the genizah in the attic of the Old-New Synagogue, which stands to this day.
